  • Research summary

Vaccination is the most effective way of protecting people against influenza. Among NHS staff, vaccination not only prevents illness among the individual themselves but also prevents morbidity and mortality from influenza among vulnerable people. By protecting themselves, NHS staff also reduce the risk of disrupting their care services, which is particularly important during autumn and winter, when pressures on front line services may be severe. As well as seasonal flu, the NHS is under pressure due to the current COVID-19 pandemic, with researchers working to develop an effective vaccine for COVID-19. It is likely that the UK will prioritise vaccinating healthcare and social care workers, alongside those at highest medical risk. How people are responding to and coping with COVID-19 now is likely to influence how they will respond to and cope with seasonal flu in the future, including their uptake of the influenza vaccine and, once it is available, a vaccination for COVID-19. Vaccination is a complex behaviour which depends on many factors. Therefore, this project seeks to explore the barriers and facilitators for NHS staff receiving the vaccinations (both seasonal flu and potential COVID-19) and to then co-design interventions to promote the uptake of vaccinations in NHS staff in Wales. The project will consist of two phases; (1) qualitative interviews with NHS staff in Wales, (2) co-design workshops with NHS staff in Wales which aim to design interventions to increase immunisation uptake. The COM-B model will be used throughout the project to identify key factors influencing the vaccination behaviour of NHS staff.
