  • Research summary

The aim of this study is to explore the experience of living with a deep SSI, using semi-structured interviews within a phenomenological approach. This will increase current knowledge of themes relevant to this experience.
The study will be carried out at Nottingham City Care Partnership, Tissue Viability Team. Tissue Viability Nurses will provide written study details to all patients with deep tissue surgical site infection who meet the inclusion criteria. Patients can then contact the researcher for further information via a reply slip. Consent to take part in the study will be obtained by the researcher.
Study Duration: The total study duration is 3 months.
Participants will be assessed for eligibility by the Tissue Viability Nurses. A participant information sheet and reply slip will be given to the patient with the researchers contact details if they would like to gain further information in taking part in the study. The researcher will then contact the participant and answer any questions the participant may have. An interview will then be arranged at the convenience to the participant. Before the interview it will be established that the participant is happy to still take part in the study. A consent form will then be signed prior to the interview. Participants can choose to be interviewed in their own home, at the tissue viability clinic or at the university.

Participant recruitment will commence in month 1 of the study. Interviews will be scheduled as soon as is convenient with the participant in month 1 or month 2. The interview will take place in the participants home, the tissue viability clinic or at the university. The researcher will adhere to the University of Nottingham Lone worker Policy if interviews take place at home.
Interview transcription will take place in months 1 and 2. Data analysis will take place in month 2.
Writing up will take place in month 3.
Participant Duration: Patients will participate in one interview which will not last more than one hour.
