  • Research summary

    Background
Most research around hip revision surgery focuses on patients’ morbidity and mortality, various implant factors or the surgery itself. There is a lack of evidence in the UK on the patient’s experience and their quality of life before and after the surgery. This study aims to provide an understanding of the patients’ experience of hip revision surgery and quality of life before and after the surgery, and to create a framework of knowledge to support and inform care.

    Methods
A mixed method will be used for this study, which includes questionnaire surveys of patients before and after hip revision surgery and semi-structured interviews for selected patients to investigate issues raised in the questionnaires and to understand in more depth the patients’ experiences around revision surgery.
    1. Literature review to provide essential background knowledge which will reinforce our methods and findings – this will include PROMs reports, hip revision studies, studies on musculoskeletal diseases and investigation into improvements to quality of life.

    2. Questionnaires given to patients before and after hip revision surgery ascertaining their expectations before, the impact of the surgery, experience after and their overall level of satisfaction. We aim to distribute 160 questionnaires to RNOH hip revision patients before the surgery and one year after hip revision surgery respectively.

    3. Semi-structured interviews with a sample of selected participants (n=15) to explore matters identified in the questionnaire.

    4. A stakeholder workshop will be held to present our preliminary findings. This will serve as data collection and dissemination. Following the workshop, the team will collate and integrate the findings from the four phases of the study and produce a final report.
