  • Research summary

This research aims to understand how patients and their network cope with co-creation processes in health services, and the implications for their well-being.

The research examines the effects of co-creation of value in health services and entails a process that includes actions by both service provider and customers in order to realize value. As co-creators, customers integrate resources from various sources, including the service provider, private sources such as peers, friends and family. For instance, resource integration occurs when an individual goes to a hospital to seek medical assistance. Whilst crucial, resource integration processes impose restrictions on individuals’ ability to make autonomous decisions. Resource integration might therefore be perceived as a ‘lock-in situation’ threatening the self and self-determination needs, prompting needs for coping. Co-creation processes and consequent coping processes are especially relevant in health services, where co-creation is often emotional and stressful.

The research will inform the decisions of hospitals in the areas of staff hiring, development and training, service process and system improvements, and quality of care. Further, it will offer insights on effective ways of managing patient expectations during co-creation processes in health service delivery, as well as the expectations of patients’ network (i.e. family, friends supporting patients).
