  • Research summary

This study will look at a mothers’ experience of the management of their child’s pain in the emergency department (ED). Several studies have explored how parents can assist in the management of acute pain but few have focused specifically on the mother or on pain in the ED. As the majority of children present with their mothers to the ED, exploring mothers’ perceptions of pain management in this context is important.

Mothers whose children aged 2 - 7 years, have been patients in the ED will be eligible for the study. The research will be conducted on one site only, the ED of a District General Hospital in the East of England.

Ten face to face semi-structured interviews will be conducted. This gives mothers the opportunity to discuss in depth their experiences of the management of their child’s pain in the ED. This will enable better understanding of how mothers feel about the management of their children’s pain in the ED and enable strategies to be developed to ensure children's pain is managed more effectively.
