Research summary
For ease of reading the term ’family therapy’ will refer to both family and couple therapy. This study is interested in understanding what influences clients with a diagnosis of a personality disorder in a therapeutic community day treatment programme (Cawley Centre, Maudsley Hospital) who are reluctant to take up the offer of family therapy. Currently around 15 out of the 19 clients in the service who have at some point been offered family therapy have been reluctant to participate in it, with 7 of these deciding not to participate at all in family therapy. As family therapy is shown as being potentially helpful to this client group, it will be beneficial to the staff team to know why clients do not take up this offer. This hopefully will lead to a change in how family therapy is presented to the clients, which hopefully will mean more take up this offer which will in turn hopefully mean better recovery rates. The study aims to find out what previous experiences, stories, meanings, beliefs and myths around family therapy are preventing clients from taking up this offer. The researcher will use semi-structured individual interviews of clients who at some point in their treatment have been reluctant to undertake family therapy. Current NHS clients will be recruited as participants from the Cawley Centre, Maudsley Hospital.
