Research summary
Understanding dementia among the Bangladeshi community in England.
This application relates to primary qualitative data collection utilising semi structured interviews with older persons (60 plus) from the Bangladeshi community with dementia (mild/moderate/severe) and their family carers/ significant others. The purpose of this research is to explore experiences of living with a diagnosis of dementia in the context of the Bangladeshi community to inform action and to produce new knowledge to better understand the personal barriers, coping strategies, etc.; information which may be transferable to others Bangladeshi older persons living with dementia and their family carers/significant others (as well as healthcare professionals delivering services) outside of the specific context of the research setting. An interview schedule has been developed based on previous research conducted: a qualitative meta-synthesis of all available primary research identify there has been no qualitative studies conducted with people with dementia from the Bangladeshi community in the UK. We have also previously conducted two local focus groups discussion with adults of Bangladeshi origin people without dementia to provide a better understanding of attitudes and knowledge of dementia within the local Bangladeshi community. Bangladeshis have higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes and heart disease than other Asian communities; both are important indicators of developing dementia in old age. In England they have lower education rates, poorer socio-economic and worse health positions risk factors for under-diagnosis, as well as poorer access to healthcare services and support.
The purpose of the primary qualitative data collection is to seek to answer the following psychosocial research questions:
• What are the range of views about dementia, perceptions, beliefs, and experiences of older Bangladeshi people with dementia, their family members who are the significant or main carers?
• What are the Bangladeshi older people's experiences of getting a dementia diagnosis, and finding support afterwards in England?
It is hoped this study will produce new knowledge and understanding of the attitudes, perceptions, and beliefs of the Bangladeshi community about dementia and increase awareness and understanding of dementia among Bangladeshi communities in England.
