Research summary
The aim of this study is to explore the child’s experience of staying in hospital from the perspectives of children and children’s nurses. Both child and nurse participants will be recruited via the regional children's hospital. Four ward managers will act as a gatekeepers and screen current patient and staff for eligibility. Eligible participants will be invited to participate. Approximately 15 children aged six to 12 years old who have had an overnight stay or more in the regional children's hospital will be interviewed. Animation software will be used,i.e. a cartoon character will assist discussion with the children. Questions will relate to how the child feels about being in hospital; having their parents around and about the children’s nurses who care for them? Six key members of nursing staff who are children's nurses and have daily contact with children who stay overnight will also be interviewed about their experiences of caring for children in hospital.
All participant data will be transcribed verbatim and use a thematic analysis approach. The research will be written up in the form of a dissertation and will be disseminated via local, national and international conferences, local seminars and published in relevant literature. This study will highlight good practice and make recommendations for improvement and so will benefit those within the United Kingdom (UK)
