Research summary
This research aims to understand the process of change in young people with disordered eating when using a manualised guided self-help treatment ‘Working to Overcome Disordered Eating’. The manual has been adapted from an adult version that has been used and evaluated (Traviss, Heywood-Everett & Hill 2011) and it is currently being used and evaluated in young people’s services in Leeds and Bradford, as a first line treatment for disordered eating.
The study aims to increase understanding around the process and mechanisms of change within this population from both a young persons and clinicians perspective.
Participants must be under 18 years of age and have been referred to the CAMHS service with a primary problem of disordered eating.
Participants will be identified by young peoples services in the West Yorkshire areas, and will have completed or disengaged from the GSH treatment.
Participants (young people) will be sent a letter on completion or disengagement from the treatment and asked to opt in to the study. If they agree they will be contacted by the researcher who will arrange a time and place to conduct a 30-40 minute interview.
Guides (clinicians) will also be approached and if consenting will be interviewed regarding their perceptions of change when using this treatment. They will be interviewed for 30-40 minutes, at their NHS base.
Interviews will be recorded on a password protected Dictaphone and uploaded onto the University of Leeds secure network within 24 hours of completion. The interviews will then be transcribed ready for analysis.
