  • Research summary

Older people living in care homes sometimes need extra care. This might be because they are physically frail or because they become confused or forgetful. Care home managers might ask the council to pay for a carer to provide care for just them all the time. This is meant to keep the older person safe from harm. However, it means they are watched all the time, which might feel uncomfortable and might restrict their freedoms. 1 to 1 care is very expensive and there might be other ways to spend the money that keep people safe but feel more acceptable for the person receiving care.

In this study we want to find out how 1 to 1 care affects older care home residents.

We will talk to up to 30 care home residents aged over 65 with experience of 1 to 1 care. We will talk to people with different types of needs and with a range of ages and experience. We will ask them about their experiences of care, the benefits and challenges, and the kind of care they would prefer.

We will also talk to up to 30 relatives of the care home residents we are interviewing. We will ask about their views of 1 to 1 care, how it affects their relative, the benefits and challenges, and the kind of care they would prefer for their relative.

We will record what everyone tells us and turn the recordings into written records. We will look at these records to see what ideas are common or different between people. We will summarise what we find in a report. This will describe how 1 to 1 care is experienced by residents and how it affects them. It will make recommendations to improve decision-making around 1 to 1 care in future.
