Research summary
Exploring change and identity in patients with Alcohol Use Disorders (AUD): A qualitative investigation of patients at University Hospital Southampton.
78% of the cost of alcohol misuse to the NHS derives from hospital-based care; in Southampton, the number of alcohol-related admissions is higher than the national average. Admission to hospital provides a vital access point for patients to get help with unhealthy alcohol use.
This project builds on Phase I of a research study currently underway at Southampton General Hospital (IRAS 204165) and intends to use qualitative methods to understand in more detail the experiences and views of patients with AUD who had been admitted to hospital in the past six months; as we are particularly interested in participants’ personal accounts, quantitative methods would not be appropriate. Face-to-face qualitative interviews will seek to understand the impact of an alcohol-related hospital admission on the lives of patients, specifically in the context of identity processes and motivation to change drinking patterns.
