Research summary
Malnutrition and infections are linked through complex and bidirectional pathways. Patients who are risk of both include those with risk factors for social exclusion, such as alcohol or drug misuse, homelessness or imprisonment. The purpose of this study is to establish the burden of malnutrition in participants with chronic infections complicated by the presence of one or more risk factor for social exclusion, and to explore perceived ideas about nutrition and chronic infections, potential adverse impact of antibiotic regimens (eg tolerability, dietary restrictions), and potential solutions for addressing malnutrition.
The results of this study are expected to build evidence of the high burden of malnutrition amongst vulnerable populations living with chronic infections in London. This will not only help clearly define the extent of the issue but will identify problems and propose solutions by the affected groups themselves, thus ensuring sustainable outcomes. It is intended that the qualitative analysis outcomes could form the basis for patient-led nutritional interventions, overall improving disease outcomes through adherence to treatment and social services.
