  • Research summary

The Clatterbridge Cancer NHS Foundation Trust (CCC) has a well-defined mission to provide the best cancer care to the people that we serve. Research for patient benefit is a core function of CCC, which is one of the largest networked cancer centres in the UK serving 2.4 million people. The expansion of CCC into Liverpool with our new hospital in the centre of Liverpool in the Knowledge Quarter and adjacent to the University and acute Trust further enhances our research ambition. In tandem with our hubs in Wirral and North Liverpool and the expansion into the Eastern sector, puts CCC in a unique position to offer access to cancer research to the patient population of Merseyside and Cheshire. This enables patients to not only be offered the most novel and up to date treatments but also due to the diversification and extension of our portfolio, psychosocial, translational, observational and real world trials.
However, it is mission critical to fully understand and streamline the patient pathway to ensure our research reach and access to research for all our patients. The region has a diverse patient population, and a wide ranging socio-economic levels and also varying health population needs. We have already developed new screening processes to identify potential participants for our clinical trials and research studies embedded into our electronic patient notes system. Further we have flexed the use of the Edge system for which we are a national exemplar to map recruitment and streamline processes across the portfolio and mapped our hotspots of recruitment and there is an urgent need to expand and enhance this work further.
We will understand any barriers to access to research and treatment options, put systems in place to address any issues found and potentially diversity/ adapt the current Trust research portfolio to support patient need.
