  • Research summary

Respiratory infections are a major cause of morbidity and mortality in the UK. Patients with chronic respiratory infections such as COPD, asthma and bronchiectasis frequently experience respiratory infections and are therefore at high risk of complications and antibiotic resistance. We have recently found in patients with COPD that the lung microbiome can predict the risk of future mortality over a 4 year period. We wish to test in this study whether the bacteria in the upper and lower airways can predict long term respiratory outcomes across multiple lung conditions.
