Research summary
This study will determine the reliability of Philips Affiniti Elast PQ Ultrasound System for the assessment of liver fibrosis and the correlation of splenic stiffness. Results from the Philips system will be compared to results from the Siemens ARFI Acuson S2000 Ultrasound System, Fibroscan, and when available, liver biopsy results that are reported as part of a patient's standard clinical care.
Prompt assessment of the degree of severity of liver fibrosis is important in guiding management of therapy in chronic liver disease. Early detection of liver fibrosis is important in predicting progression of cirrhosis and its complications. A liver biopsy is often required, but this is an invasive procedure that comes with risks. Along with the commercial and research development of serum diagnostic markers, there is an increasing interest in non-invasive imaging techniques.
Ultrasound-based Transient Elastography (TE) imaging methods is the first imaging technique to be used in common practice. Fibroscan (Echosens, Paris, France) and the Siemens-based ARFI system are at different stages of validation, and this study aims to compare results from these methods to the Elast PQTM system from Philips. This is another ultrasound-based technique, which has recently been developed, and merits further assessment.
