Research summary
Background: Lower urinary tract and prolapse symptoms are present in 30% to 40% of adult female population. Urodynamic tests are performed to assess the lower urinary tract function. They are time consuming, invasive and expensive. The test involves passing thin catheters into the bladder and rectum. Many women find it uncomfortable and embarrasing. These tests have limited predictive value for the outcome of the treatment.
Aim: To find association of different ultrasound measurements of lower urinary tract and pelvic floor with urodynamic diagnosis and outcome of treatment.
Study group: Women, age 18 years and above, having lower urinary tract or pelvic floor symptoms, able to consent, able to communicate in English, without any history of pelvic malignancy or radiotherapy.
Study design: Prospective cohort study
All participants will undergo transperineal ultrasound scan of the lower urinary tract and pelvic floor. They will be contacted three months later by telephone to confirm date of start of the treatment. They will fill a validated questionnaire after 6 months of treatment.Study site: The study will be conducted at St Mary's Hospital, Paddington.
Duration: One year.
