  • Data collection arrangements

In order to enable epidemiological analysis, data for male UK service personnel and civilians involved in the UK nuclear weapons atmospheric testing programme between 1952 and 1967 were collated in the 1980s and stored in a secure, password protected computer system. This includes information on age and employment as well as detail of cause of death and cancer incidence. A comparable number of records are similarly stored for a matched control group. These data are collated from employer-held records and from national death and cancer registries.

  • Research programme

The project was commissioned in 1983 to investigate reports of health detriment amongst those who had participated in the UK nuclear weapons atmospheric tests held in the Pacific and in Australia between 1952 and 1967. The long-running records-based study has reported in the peer-reviewed scientific press and continues the follow-up through national registries
