Research summary
Hypoparathyroidism is a rare condition where the parathyroid glands do not make enough parathyroid hormone. This hormone helps control the levels of calcium and phosphorus in the body. Without it, calcium levels can become too low and phosphorus levels too high. This can cause symptoms such as muscle cramps, tingling in the hands or feet, and tiredness. In more serious cases, it can lead to seizures or heart problems. If not treated properly, the condition can be lifethreatening threatening.
Because hypoparathyroidism is uncommon, there is still a lot we do not know about how it affects people over time or the best ways to treat it. Creating a patient database can help researchers collect information about symptoms, treatments, and longterm term outcomes. This will improve understanding of the condition, help doctors diagnose it earlier, and guide future research to improve care and quality of life for people living with it. To do this well, we aim to include patients from several hospitals and centres.
All information collected will be kept confidential and stored securely. Patients will be asked by their local clinical team if they would like to take part, and they can choose whether or not to participate. Choosing not to take part will not affect the care they receive. The study protocol will be reviewed by an ethics committee, and data will only be collected in line with their guidance and approval.REC name
