  • Data collection arrangements

All patients entering CLL clinical trials (that the UK CLL Trials Biobank is part of) will be asked if they would like to give
samples to the Biobank by their local healthcare team. Samples before treatment and at further time points when
appointments are scheduled as part of the trial will be collected (samples are not mandatory, and all do not have to be
given but enhances the value of the trial). Before treatment the samples collected are a blood sample (clotted &
unclotted), saliva and if being done a small amount of liquid bone marrow for some trials. The samples are then sent
to the central labs at the Univeristy of Liverpool where it is processed to separate out the white cells from the blood and
bone marrow. Non tumour DNA is isolated from the saliva, serum from the clotted blood and plasma from the
unclotted blood. Sample storage and processing all takes place within a special facility that is dedicated to only
handling samples from clinical trials (GCLP facility), as there are government regulations that need to be adhered to.
The data that is stored and released to researchers by the biobank is the trial and the trial number. The consent form
that is signed and a copy sent to the biobank is retained in a safe and only acknowlegement that it has been received is
    stored on any database.

  • Research programme

The UK CLL Trials Biobank is of pivotal importance to the NCRI CLL trials portfolio as it allows the collection and storage of clinical samples to the highest standards across multiple trials. In doing so, the Biobank provides the UK with an unrivalled resource for high quality biomarker research which will ultimately lead to the application of stratified medicine to CLL therapy.
