  • Research summary

Hypertension is a major health issue globally and is the number one risk factor for cardiovascular illness and death. Despite decades of innovation in medications, poor blood pressure control remains a problem worldwide. Alternative therapies for hypertension are therefore urgently needed, especially in patients in whom blood pressure remains refractory to treatment and those with highly variable BP for whom there is no evidence based therapy.

Baroreflex activation therapy is a CE-marked, pacemaker-like device that helps to augment the body's own reflexes to changes in blood pressure to improve blood pressure control. We will use this therapy in patients referred to the NHS Barts Blood Pressure Centre of Excellence with refractory hypertension and those with highly variable blood pressure and follow patients up for 3 years to evaluate the safety and beneficial effects.
