  • Research summary

Metabolic dysfunction associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD), also referred to as non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is caused by a build up of fat in the liver. MAFLD is linked to obesity and type 2 diabetes, whilst it significantly increases the risk of cardiovascular disease. Definite diagnosis of MAFLD requires histological confirmation with a liver biopsy, but this is an invasive procedure which is not feasible for all individuals with suspected MAFLD. The UHCW NHS Trust has a multidisciplinary clinical pathway for the systematic follow-up of patients that are investigated/monitored for MAFLD. This UHCW pathway establishes regular 12-month follow-up of these patients for at least 2-3 years as clinically required. Each patient within this multidisciplinary care pathway undergoes a number of clinical and lab examinations/tests at each follow-up timepoint as clinically required, in order to promptly diagnose, categorize and identify the potential progression of MAFLD. The present study will recruit patients from relevant UHCW clinics that are eligible and/or followed in this multidisciplinary pathway, and will follow a “real world” structured research approach which aims to allow us to systematically explore novel MAFLD biomarkers/diagnostics and assess whether any baseline characteristics (e.g. novel biomarkers, fat mass, anxiety levels etc.) exhibit significant associations with MAFLD diagnosis, and/or categorization and/or progression.
