Research summary
Lung cancer is the most common cause of cancer death in the UK, and earlier diagnosis improves treatment options and quality of life for patients. The NHS Lung Cancer Screening (LCS) programme offers assessment of lung cancer risk to people aged 55-74 with a history of smoking, however more than half of invites go unanswered. Improving uptake of LCS will help detect more cancers at early stages, in line with the Long Term Plan for the NHS, which aims to diagnose at least 75% of cancers at early stages by 2028.
The study aims to identify feasible options to increase engagement with LCS, by measuring whether home urine collection for cancer screening is a suitable alternative. Urine home collection has been shown to be acceptable as a sampling method for men and women, however there is limited data on how this may be accepted in non-responding cancer screening cohorts. Multi-cancer early diagnostic tests (MCEDs) are a rapidly developing field for cancer diagnoses, using blood or urine samples to look for early signs of cancer.UH-CAN LUNG is a feasibility study to understand if cancer screening non-responders will return a self-administered urine collection with a useable sample for an MCED. Participants will be contacted from the register of LCS non-responders based at two sites in London and South England. The study will send sample collections kits to 1000 individuals who have failed to respond to invitations to LCS and may be at higher risk of developing lung cancer. Sampling kits will also include a questionnaire to evaluate participant ease and acceptability of using a urine home collection kit. The study will also assess whether supply of an alternative screening method will prompt any participants to engage in the LCS Programme.
