  • Data collection arrangements

SThe UCL/UCLH Biobank for Studying Health and Disease (“the Biobank”) is a repository for both biological samples and data collected from patients attending University College London Hospital (UCLH) NHS Foundation Trust, UCL Partner (UCLP) NHS Trusts* and the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital (RNOH) NHS Trust. Samples and data are stored at the Biobank based at the UCL Cancer Institute, University College London. Samples and data are also maintained at our satellite sites: Cellular Pathology, University College Hospital, Charles Bell House, University College London and the RNOH, Stanmore.

The Biobank includes both existing collections and new material collected prospectively. Samples
are mainly collected from donors with a wide variety of different cancer types following an informed consent process. All
human tissue samples are stored within secure and HTA licenced premises.

  • Research programme

The UCL/UCLH Biobank for Studying Health and Disease supports research projects principally involved in the study of human disease and the normal functioning of the human body. To meet this need, the Biobank stores a full spectrum of normal and pathological specimens. The majority of samples were originally taken for diagnostic purposes and the Biobank stores material from these samples that is surplus to diagnostic requirements. However samples also include blood and related products and other naturally excreted body fluids such as sputum, saliva, faeces and urine specifically collected for the Biobank. The diagnostic histopathology formalin fixed paraffinembedded archive of tissue blocks and tissue sections together with human tissue used in xenograft experiments also form part of the Biobank.
