  • Research summary

The incidence of type 2 diabetes is growing and the disease more complex in those diagnosed at a young age. However, young adults are less likely to receive all the support they need to manage diabetes and group education is geared towards older adults. Therefore we have worked together with people aged 18-26 who have type 2 diabetes to design a group support programme. The aim of this study is to evaluate participants' experiences of the programme and explore its potential impacts.

To achieve this we will do two things. Firstly, we will interview those who took part in the new programme to find out what diabetes was like for them before the programme, their views and experiences of both the programme and diabetes care in general. Secondly, we will use anonymised data that is collected routinely in the diabetes clinic to see if there are any potential changes in blood sugar, weight, or appointment attendance before and after the programme. This data will be fully anonymised by the direct care team and NHS numbers will be checked against NHS Digital’s National Data Opt-out list before being provided to the research team.
We will also use existing anonymised data to see if there are any differences between people who take part in the programme and those who don't.

We will use the findings from the study to optimise the support programme and conduct further research into it to see if it is effective in supporting young adults with type 2 diabetes.
