Research summary
Mixed methods study split into two parts using questionnaires and interviews with two groups of children and their parents; children in primary school [aged 8-10] and adolescents in secondary education [aged 11-14]. In part 1 of the study, the parents and their children will complete a number of questionnaires to measure the number of self-management tasks completed and the level of parental involvement as well as self-efficacy to carry out these behaviours. Children’s HbA1c levels will be analysed for a difference between the child and adolescent groups and for those adolescents diagnosed during primary school, for a difference between primary and secondary school age. Those that are in the adolescent group for part 1 will be given the option to receive information to take part in part 2. In part 2, semi structured interviews will be conducted on a small group of adolescents to determine themes associated as barriers to self-care behaviours.
Aim: To determine whether self-efficacy impacts the number of diabetes self-management behaviours one conducts. To determine whether there is a relationship between parental involvement and self-efficacy. To derive themes associated with a decrease in self-management of type 1 diabetes.REC name
