Research summary
Heart disease and strokes are leading causes of mortality in the UK. Medication to reduce cholesterol reduces death from heart disease or stroke by about a fifth, but adherence to prescribed medications is lower than ideal. We have developed an intervention delivered by mobile phone, designed to increase medicine taking to prevent heart disease. In order to assess whether the intervention is effective, we plan to conduct a trial with patients who have been prescribed cholesterol lowering medication who will be randomly allocated to the adherence to medication intervention or to a control group. Before we can conduct the main large-scale trial, we will conduct a smaller pilot trial in order to establish the feasibility of our methods of recruitment and follow up. If a trial is shown to be feasible we will conduct a larger trial to establish the effects of this intervention on LDL cholesterol.
