Research summary
This study will assess late pregnancy health of women expecting twins, and early neonatal health and wellbeing of the children. We will obtain biological information on collected samples namely, blood, cheek swabs and feacal samples and placental and cord blood samples and relate this to lifestyle and health information during the pregnancy and at birth. Studying twins (identical and non-identical) helps us to work out the importance of genetic and environmental influences on health and disease. Exploring biological profiles in mothers and newborn twins will help us to determine how the human body translates genetic and environmental factors into molecular signals that have effects on human health. This pilot study will help us assess the feasibility of carrying a large-scale research project of this kind.
