  • Data collection arrangements

NHS Organisations in the Thames Valley and Surrey area are establishing a secure data environment. This will allow patient data to be used for research without the data leaving the NHS. Access to safe versions of the data will be granted for purposes that are seen to benefit the public, patients, and the healthcare system.

Data will be included for every patient whose care is delivered by organisations within the area, unless they have chosen otherwise. The data will consist of information that would be presented in a shared care record, together with more detailed information from specialist systems and services.

The full version of the data will not be made available. Instead, an extract will be prepared for each project that is approved. This extract will contain only the information needed for the project in question. It will not contain any 'patient identifiers', such as names or NHS numbers.

Each extract will be transferred to a separate part of the environment where the researchers for that project can conduct their analysis. Their activity is monitored, and data cannot be downloaded. The results of analysis will be checked and exported by the data management team on behalf of researchers.

  • Research programme

We welcome applications for research data services from any approved researcher and research organisation. All requests will be subject to a rigorous data access approval process, which incorporates the perspectives of patients and the public.  All research conducted must pass the public interest test.  We are particularly interested in research proposals from within the Thames Valley and Surrey region, research that aims to directly benefit our patients and NHS, and research with a focus on multimodal data.
