  • Research summary

Tuberculosis is an infection, usually of the lungs, that affects around 5000 people each year in the UK. It is treated with at least six months of antibiotics which cures the majority of people, but a minority (around 5%) will die during the treatment course. Some of these deaths will be related to either the infection or the treatment course given.

There is little information available about the cause of these deaths, how long after catching tuberculosis people die, and which people are most at risk of dying in the UK.

The aim of this project is to review the medical records of these patients to find out when and why they died and whether the death was related to tuberculosis or tuberculosis treatment. The records for patients who died from a tuberculosis-related cause will be reviewed in greater detail to find out what risks they had for dying from tuberculosis.

Their risks will be compared to patients of the same age who survived tuberculosis treatment to see if patients with high risk of dying from tuberculosis can be identified at the time they are diagnosed. If this is possible it would allow doctors and nurses to select patients to monitor more closely, and in some cases, reduce or modify the risk of death. An example of this would be controlling other diseases the patient already had, such as diabetes, more closely or avoiding some treatment options.
