Research summary
Knee osteoarthritis (OA) is a degenerative disorder which accompanies aging and influences the articular cartilage of the knee joint. This disease is strongly influenced by joint mechanics and therefore the way in which the knee joint is
loaded during functional activities. However, to date the effect of upper body position on joint loading and muscle patterns has not been investigated in detail. It is possible that a forward leaning upper body posture could lead to increased levels of muscle activation and that this could increase the load on the knee joint. The project will aim to understand the effect of a forward leaning upper body posture on both lower limb joint moments (joint turning forces) and also on muscle activation patterns. This investigation will be carried out on healthy subjects and also people with knee osteoarthritis.
