Research summary
This study proposes that a Therapy Radiographer will undertake follow-up for Prostate Cancer patients who have completed a course of Radiotherapy treatment. Willing patients will be randomised for review by either the doctor or Therapy Radiographer. A Therapy Radiographer who is suitably qualified will undertake the follow-up review.
Study objectives include:
- demonstrating Therapy Radiographers can assist at follow-up clinics through undertaking review when suitably qualified as they possess expert knowledge of Radiotherapy treatment delivery and side effects,
- financially beneficial for Therapy Radiographers to undertake patient follow-up
- a reduction in waiting times at the clinic for patients,
- reduction in the overall wait to be appointed for follow up,
- ease pressures on clinicians time and resources,
- endorse therapy radiographer role development within a defined scope of practice.
Patients will be identified as eligible at a short meeting between the doctor and Therapy Radiographer a couple of weeks prior to the clinic and a Patient Information Sheet with Consent Form will be posted for consideration.
Eligibility will be re-confirmed on the day of clinic. Eligible, willing patients, will sign the study consent form and are then randomly selected for review by either the doctor or Therapy Radiographer. Patients will be asked to complete a short structured questionnaire immediately after their review.
The patients arrival time, length of consultation, whether the patient met with a Nurse or AHP,how many patients reviewed by the Therapy Radiographer also required review by doctor and overall time in the department will also be recorded.
Completed documents and requested appointments will be assessed for accuracy and compared.
Patients will have access to a clinician should they present with any unexpected problems, or if they refuse to participate in this research study.REC name
