Research summary
There has been limited research that explores the possible psychological impact of having a diagnosis of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), in particular the traumatogenic nature of the experience of acute exacerbation of symptoms of COPD. It is suggested that a small number of people with COPD may experience the symptoms of their condition as traumatic and they might develop health anxiety and psychological problems associated with trauma symptoms as a result.
This study aims to see if there are links between COPD and the experience of trauma symptoms and health anxiety in people who experience acute exacerbation's of their COPD symptoms. This will be done by analysing responses on standardised questionnaire measures. A small number of participants will also be invited to attend an interview to talk in more detail about their experience of having a lung disease and how this impacts on their psychological functioning.
Participants will be recruited from an outpatient clinic within Leicester, located at the Glenfield Hospital. Participants will be identified through their attendance at scheduled routine appointments. Inclusion and exclusion criteria will be applied in selection to participate in this study.
