Research summary
Troponin I is a protein component of cardiac muscle which, when elevated, is sensitive and specific for injury to the heart. The most common use of this test, therefore, is diagnosis of myocardial infarction ("heart attack"). When Troponin I is measured in adults being admitted to an Adult Intensive Care Unit (AICU), most of whom do not have symptoms suggestive of heart disease, there is a correlation between it being elevated and poor outcome. Interpretation of Troponin I in acutely unwell children, however, is less well understood. It has been routinely measured on children admitted to our Paediatric Intensive Care Unit since April 2014 and this project plans to retrospectively review those results and evaluate how they correlate with outcome in this setting.
The values of these, routinely collected Troponin I results, will also be compared to the values of Troponin I from prior to April 2014 when it was only measured in children for whom there was a clinical suspicion of heart damage by the attending consultant intensivist.
