Research summary
Approximately 30-40% of patient with severe mitral regurgitation have concomitant regurgitation of the tricuspid valve, termed as functional tricuspid regurgitation. The added benefit of concomitant tricuspid valve repair along with mitral valve repair is debatable. This pilot randomised controlled study in the form investigates to find out if concomitant tricuspid valve repair will improve the exercise capacity of patients in addition to what they benefit due to mitral repair alone. This study will also gather vital information regarding various clinical endpoints of interest which will help us organise a larger multicentre randomised clinical trial. In this study we intend to recruit adult patients between the ages of 18 and 85 years who has severe mitral regurgitation and at least moderate functional tricuspid regurgitation. The study will be conducted in the Department of Cardiac Surgery at Golden Jubilee National Hospital, Glasgow. Patients recruited into the study will undergo cardiopulmonary exercise test (CPET) in addition to routine tests including echocardiography in clinical practice before their operation and at 6 months after surgery. In addition to the routine blood tests the study subjects will have a blood test to detect levels of serum BNP before surgery and at 6 months after surgery.
