Research summary
This Tri-Prep study will investigate the views, understandings and perspectives of people with severe mental illness and mental health professionals (MHPs) on smoking, smoking reduction and cessation, and vaping. This study will inform the design of future research on helping people with severe mental illness to reduce their smoking. We want to find out how we can make our research acceptable and suitable for participants. To do this, a researcher will conduct one-on-one think-aloud interviews (Whether the think-aloud and interview occur in one or two sessions will depend on input from our PPI meeting.) with people with severe mental illness. These think-aloud interviews will involve the researcher showing the participant some example research materials and asking them to ‘think out loud’ about how they might engage with the materials or any problems they might have with the materials. The researcher will also hold focus group with MHPs about their views on smoking reduction. The results from these interviews and focus groups will be used to help us make future research for people with severe mental illness and for MHPs more acceptable.
