Research summary
The aim of this project is to undertake a product evaluation of the Trezzo range of mattresses (manufactured by Essential Healthcare) by comparing them against usual static mattresses in use on the Integrated Care ward at Rochdale Infirmary over a 6- week period. This will include investigating any differences in patient-related outcomes (comfort and sleep quality) between the different mattress types; comparing mattress characteristics e.g. moisture transfer, skin temperature control and comfort; to understand the patients perception of being nursed on the Trezzo range of mattresses and to understand ease of use of the mattresses by nursing staff. The sample for the evaluation is patients and staff on the Integrated Care Ward at Rochdale Infirmary.
Inclusion Criteria
• All patients admitted to the Integrated Care Ward at Rochdale Infirmary
• All nursing staff on the Integrated Care Ward at Rochdale Infirmary
• Patients must be able to understand, read and speak English
• Participants must be able to understand information about the evaluation and give informed consent for participation.
The evaluation will benefit patients and the public by understanding which mattresses are most comfortable, help to relieve pressure effectively (thus reducing the incidence of skin damage) and which mattresses the nursing staff find are easier to use on a daily basis. Patients will be asked to complete a short questionnaire that will take no longer than 2 minutes to complete and will be asked if they would be willing to be interviewed to discuss their experience of being nursed on the Trezzo mattress (a maximum of 4 interviews to be conducted). Nursing staff will be asked to complete 2 questionnaires regarding ease of use of the mattresses and if they would be willing to be interviewed to explore their experiences of using the mattress (4 interviews to be conducted).REC name
