  • Research summary

Title: Design of questionnaires to measure treatment satisfaction and quality of life in people with varicose veins.
There is currently no validated measure of satisfaction with treatment for varicose veins. A measure is needed for use in clinical trials evaluating treatments. This qualitative study will recruit patients who have had treatment for varicose veins to participate in an interview to contribute to the design of a new questionnaire to measure satisfaction with treatment for varicose veins (tentative name, Venous Treatment Satisfaction Questionnaire (VenousTSQ)). Most of the interviews will take place in the UK with a small number of interviews in the USA. Any changes needed to the US version of the questionnaire will be checked with a final set of interviews in the UK to determine which of any modifications to the US English version would also benefit the UK English version. Two existing overview items to measure quality of life and the impact of the condition on quality of life will also be pilot tested with this sample of patients after adapting the wording to be suitable for people who have had varicose vein treatment. Steering group meetings between each set of approximately five interviews will discuss interview findings and decide modifications to be made to the questionnaires before the next round of interviews. When the final interview is complete the questionnaires will be ready for use in clinical trials. Data from the first trial in which the VenousTSQ is used will allow the validity and reliability of the new questionnaire to be assessed and scoring guidelines can then be provided.
