  • Research summary

Cancer and its treatment are known to have a profound effect on patient-reported health outcomes. There are no well-validated questionnaires designed specifically to assess cancer treatment satisfaction and the full range of cancer-related symptoms. Given the treatment options available for people with cancer, many of which are invasive and/or associated with unpleasant physical symptoms, it is important to identify patients who may benefit from alternative treatments or who require additional support in managing the effects of cancer and its treatment. Sensitive measures of treatment satisfaction and cancer-related symptoms are also needed for clinical trials of new treatments or treatment combinations in the future. The present study aims to develop two new condition-specific measures: the Cancer Treatment Satisfaction Questionnaire (CancerTSQ) and the Cancer Symptom Rating Questionnaire (CancerSRQ). First, two oncology clinicians from Barts NHS Hospital Trust will provide feedback on lists of items from the pre-existing -TSQ and -SRQ Item Libraries, compiled from our experience designing questionnaires for other health conditions. Secondly, semi-structured interviews will be conducted with patients having treatment for a range of different cancers (N=30). Interviews lasting approximately one hour will be conducted via secure videolink or telephone call. Patients will be asked questions about their cancer, its treatment, and symptoms they experience. Third, patients will be invited to complete and provide feedback on draft versions of the two new questionnaires. The design team will meet between each set of approximately 5 interviews to review interview responses and identify any modifications which are needed to the questionnaires. After the interviews are finished a larger sample of approximately 360 participants will be invited to complete the CancerTSQ and CancerSRQ alongside a battery of other patient-reported outcome measures to evaluate the psychometric structure, reliability and preliminary validity of the measures.
