  • Research summary

There are many people with psychosis who have used cannabis. In the past there have been research studies asking how people would like their mental health to be treated. There have been others looking into how to get people to reduce their cannabis use, although no existing treaments for cannabis use have been found to work well. Perhaps this is because this group of people have never been asked about the kind of treatment for cannabis use they would prefer. We feel that it is very important to ask about what people actually want from treatment, including whether they want any treatment at all. This could mean people get more out of their treatment, and help the NHS to offer a better service in the future.

This study will involve asking people who have experienced an episode of psychosis who have also used cannabis what they want from a talking therapy. They will meet with a researcher for up to an hour and a half to answer questions about their experiences. As well as talking to an interviewer, they will be given a list of possible therapies to read through. This list will explain what the therapy would involve, how long it would take, and some of its advantages and disadvantages. Participants will be asked to put these in order of how much they would like to receive each type of talking therapy. They will then talk to a researcher about their experiences and give their opinions, which will be recorded on a digital recorder.
