Uveitis is a generic term for many different inflammatory conditions inside the eye. In anatomical terms, we can talk about front (anterior), middle (intermediate) and rear (posterior) uveitis. If the inflammation affects the entire uvea, it is called ‘panuveitis’. In most cases, drugs that affect the immune system are prescribed to treat active inflammation of the eye in uveitis of the posterior segment or the whole eye. As an example, these include corticosteroids (cortisone) and other immune-modulating drugs. All of these drugs are effective in uveitis, but also have side effects, meaning the duration of therapy using these drugs should only be carried out for the period necessary due to eye inflammation. Unfortunately, there are only very few studies that have investigated the length of time after which patients are able to reduce or discontinue such immunomodulating therapy without inflammation returning. This is mainly because these conditions are rare and only a small number of people are affected at each uveitis centre. The TOFU registry therefore aims to genrate sicientific evidence and enhance uveitis research.
Research programme
The TOFU registry is collecting data on non-infectious non-anterior uveitis and is managed by a project manager located in Bonn, supervised by two project leaders. Data mnagament has been established at the Studienzentrale Bonn (study center Bonn, SZB). The database Server is located at Institut für Medizinische Biometrie, Informatik und Epidemiologie (Institute for Medical Biometry, Informatics and Epidemiology, IMBIE). TOFI is working closely with patient organistaion on uveitis in Germany. TOFU aims to enhance uveitis research by making the databse available for all centers involvedin TOFU. We also collaborate with the OASIS registry located in Singapore.
