  • Research summary

Some people who experience psychosis may find it difficult to take part in group therapies and individual “gold-standard” treatments. The purpose of this study is to test whether an individualised Mindfulness-based intervention, offered more flexibly by giving participants more control over therapy, is an accessible, alternative treatment option. Mindfulness is a way of training the mind to respond to experiences with acceptance and non-judgement, in the present moment, without getting caught up in them. The study is interested in promoting engagement with therapy, improving quality of life and reducing psychological distress for people experiencing psychosis.

This study aims to recruit 15 participants from the Edinburgh Psychiatric Rehabilitation service and offer them a Mindfulness-Based intervention, which will take up to 16 weeks. Eligible participants will be over the age of 16, have the capacity to consent to treatment and have a primary diagnosis of a psychosis spectrum disorder. Participants will have up to 3 initial appointments in the first 2-3 weeks of the study, during which they will meet with the researcher, who will introduce them to Mindfulness, complete questionnaires and work on a collaborative formulation of their difficulties. This will take place in a quiet, confidential space at the Royal Edinburgh Hospital. Participants will be able to choose how many sessions they would like to attend (from a maximum of 12), how often they attend and how long the sessions are (up to 60 minutes each). In the intervention phase of the study participants will have the treatment sessions as agreed. The researcher will guide participants through short Mindfulness practices, after which participants will be invited to reflect on their experience. Participants will be encouraged and supported to practice Mindfulness outside the sessions. Participants will be asked to complete questionnaires at different points throughout the course of the study.
