Research summary
Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) runs an often unpredictable course with periods of remission and periods of flares. In the past treatment concentrated on getting patients into remission. Current evidence suggest that predictors including blood, faecal, endoscopic and radiological tests can help predict the course of IBD. Guidance suggests treatment escalation ("treatment beyond symptoms") based on these tests to avoid disease complications. While there is expert consensus on this it is unclear how patients view the concept of treatment escalation when they feel well. The aim of the study is to assess how patients view the concept of treating beyond symptoms, which treatment goals they find worthwhile and how beneficial a treatment would have to be to be accepted. We will also ask about the acceptability of methods for bowel cancer surveillance in this group. One year follow up data will be gained from medical records to analyse what factors predicted treatment escalation.
