Research summary
Returning to and maintaining work after traumatic brain injury (TBI) is known to be difficult (van Velzen et al 2009). A UK study entitled 'Return to work after traumatic brain injury: A Cohort comparison study and feasibility economic analysis' conducted by the principal investigator for her PhD, recruited 94 participants in 2007/8 (Radford et al 2013). Forty participants had access to a NHS occupational therapist specializing in vocational rehabilitation immediately post traumatic brain injury. These participants were more likely to be in work at 12 months compared to 54 participants who received usual NHS care. However, the longer-term impact of TBI on participants work status, mood and quality of life is not known. This study aims to determine whether it is possible to contact the same participants to ascertain their vocational status and explore their functional ability, mood and quality of life seven to eight years post traumatic brain injury by asking participants to complete one questionnaire. The study also aims to interview up to eight participants by telephone to investigate what helped or hindered returning to work. This unique prospective comparison of two current NHS approaches may help us explore any impact of specialist intervention verses usual NHS rehabilitation and will inform future studies.
