  • Research summary

Guidelines for treatment of complex post-traumatic stress disorder (CPTSD) issued by the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies (ISTSS) endorse a phased-based approach for the treatment of CPTSD (2012). A phased based approach, as recommended by trauma experts, includes three stages; stabilization, trauma exposure and reintegration. This final phase emphasizes reclaiming life, engaging in society, work, education and relationships. A recent systematic review done by Purnell et.al., (2021) has shown that there is currently limited and weak evidence for what interventions may be helpful to achieve reintegration. This study will focus on exploring views of trauma service users with complex PTSD, how they see reintegration and what they would like to be offered. We will conduct qualitative interviews with trauma service users with a diagnosis of CPTSD. Service users and professionals working with people with CPTSD, will be consulted about interview questions, participant information sheet and consent form. Trauma service users with complex PTSD undergoing phase 2 intervention will be identified by clinicians in specialist trauma services in Barnet, Enfield and Haringey Mental Health NHS Trust, PTSD pathway, Camden and Islington traumatic stress clinic, and South West London and St George’s Mental Health NHS Trust Traumatic Stress Service. Eligible service users will be provided with information about the study inviting them to participate in an interview and if interested, to contact the lead researcher Giedre Mohite via email. Potential participants will be sent the study Participant Information Sheet and Consent form, which they will be asked to sign before taking part in the interview. Interviews will be conducted either face-to-face or online by MS Teams, using a semi-structured interview schedule.
