  • Research summary

The prevalence of psychological trauma is talked about in patients with severe asthma and inducible laryngeal obstruction (ILO). Patients with severe and life threatening asthma may experience trauma through asthma attacks which can lead to intensive care admissions. Similarly the experience of not being able to breathe in those with ILO can lead to the experience of trauma, psychologically and medically. Furthermore, participants may have encountered a traumatic episode at some point in their life which be unrelated to their respiratory condition, but may still have an impact on it in terms of how they self-manage and cope with the demands and challenges of it.

When people struggle psychologically, they can find their respiratory condition, such as severe asthma, much harder to cope with and manage too. Gaining an understanding of how common this is will help improve service provision and enhance patient care. This is a questionnaire study to better understand the prevalence of trauma.
