Research summary
This proposed follow up study aims to look at how decisions are made for and with adults with severe and profound intellectual disabilities who are approaching a transition within adult services. This might be (1) a transition from one service to another, (2) transitioning out of the family home or (3) cases where it is felt that a change would be important and where a transition is wanted but where there might be nowhere to transition to. The study proposes to follow 1 to 3 adults (1 to 3 cases) through the transition process. The study proposes to use case study methodology. This means that the researcher will use different qualitative methods to collect data from different participants. The researcher hopes to be able to conduct interviews with families and professionals and to get access to documents, conduct observations of the person with severe or profound ID and might use arts and photographs. Participants will be recruited through third sector adult service organisations, such as care providers or family support agencies.
