Research summary
Compared with other young people, care leavers are expected to live independently early. Planning starts shortly after their 16th birthday, and their transition from children’s services usually happens at 18. Parallel to this, some will be transferring into adult health care, some across several specialties. Those transitioning from Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services may or may not be eligible for adult provision. Our study aims to explore how multiple service trajectories are experienced by young people and consider the match between young people’s participation in their transitional care, and the aspirations for their participation.
We want to find out:
- What young people’s experiences are of transitioning from a range of children’s and adolescent services
-Young people's understanding of transition
- How different agencies compare in their transition practices, and how they collaborate
- Which adults were most helpful; what worked well and what might have worked better
- The extent to which young people participate in the decisions on their transition care plans
- How young people’s experiences compare with the views of adults involved in their care, and with local and national policies.
We will work with young people undergoing transition out of care whilst being moved out of paediatric or Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services, and with young people with a disability. We will hold a series of group meetings which will be conversations, joint creative projects and group interviews.
The next part of the study will have a strong participatory element with young people having the opportunity to learn research skills. The researchers will explore with the young people whether there are particular questions related to transition or relationships with health services, which they would like to take forward, including interviews with adult professionals in health and social care, and the kinds of questions to be asked.REC name
