Research summary
Having a personality disorder or mood disorder disrupts the person's ability to carry out daily activities. A relapse of mental illness and admission to hospital or crisis team further disrupts a person's ability to carry out daily activities. An occupational therapy intervention, Graduating Living skills Outside the Ward, has been developed for adults with psychosis and demonstrates preliminary evidence of effectiveness. This current study seeks to ensure GLOW is relevant to two further diagnoses by asking service users with mood or personality disorders about their experience of returning to daily life post-discharge from hospital as little is currently known about this area.
Semi structured interviews will be carried out with 16 adult service users who have left hospital in the previous one to six months. The interviews will be lead by a researcher with lived experience. The participants will be asked about their experiences of carrying out daily living activities following discharge from hospital. The results of analysis of the interviews will be used to revise the GLOW intervention manual to ensure it meets the needs of these two client groups. This will support the preparation for a future grant application for a randomised controlled trial of GLOW to test its clinical and cost effectiveness.REC name
