Research summary
There has been an increase in media coverage in relation to transgender and as a possible result of promotion, mental health services have received referrals for transgender patients. Transgender adults experience rates of anxiety, depression and suicide that are dramatically higher than non-transgender adults, which may be due to years of discrimination, rejection and internal conflict. Rates of suicide are increased, with 48% of individuals having made at least one attempt on their life. The prevalence of suicide remains high amongst transgender individuals irrespective of them disclosing their transgender status and undergoing gender reassignment surgery. Despite transgender individuals being in the “at risk” group, reaching out for help is less common for them.
