  • Research summary

There has been an increase in media coverage in relation to transgender and as a possible result of promotion, mental health services have received referrals for transgender patients. Transgender adults experience rates of anxiety, depression and suicide that are dramatically higher than non-transgender adults, which may be due to years of discrimination, rejection and internal conflict. Rates of suicide are increased, with 48% of individuals having made at least one attempt on their life. The prevalence of suicide remains high amongst transgender individuals irrespective of them disclosing their transgender status and undergoing gender reassignment surgery. Despite transgender individuals being in the “at risk” group, reaching out for help is less common for them.

    Aim:
The aim of the study is to discover the challenges faced by Crisis Resolution and Home Treatment Team (CRHT) in providing mental health support to transgender individuals, and to evaluate the experiences of transgender patients.

    Objectives:
To achieve this aim, the following objectives have been formulated:
    - To assess the demographic characteristics of CRHT
    - To determine the level of support and training provided to allow CRHT’s to effectively support transgender patients
    - To understand CRHT staff attitude towards transgender patients
    - To evaluate the experiences of transgender patients towards CRHT
