  • Research summary

Babies from a multiple birth (twins, triplets)are much more likely to require Neonatal Intensive Care and also to be transferred out to different hospitals putting a strain on the wellbeing of their parents. There is little evidence in the literature regarding this topic especially with regards to representing the experiences of both parents (i.e mothers and fathers).

This research therefore seeks to address this gap in knowledge.

The aim of this research project is to undertake a qualitative study of the views and experiences of parents with babies from a multiple pregnancy who were transferred for Neonatal Intensive Care in the North-East Region to one of the three Level Three Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICU).

The inclusion criteria are that the participants must be the parent of a baby from a multiple pregnancy who has received care in more than one hospital (i.e. has been transferred) and that the transfer occurred in order to receive Neonatal Intensive Care. Participants will not be approached during the first six months after the transfer occurs.

Participants will be approached in writing by Dr Nick Embleton (Consultant Neonatal Paediatrician). The recruitment process will also include the use of charity organisations such as Tiny Lives,Bliss (Baby Life Support Systems) and the Twins and Multiple Births Association (Tamba) the use of social media by way of advertisement of the study. Potential participants will then be provided with a Participant Information Sheet.

If potential participants complete the form to be contacted then their contact details will be passed to the Masters’ Student undertaking the project.

Data will be collected via semi-structured interviews following a Topic Guide.
